A Mississippi State University mechanical engineering graduate is receiving a top national honor from U.S. Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine.
Clarksdale native Sean D. Cummings is the publication's Most Promising Engineer for 2000. He is profiled in the Black Engineer of the Year Awards section of the March/April issue.
Since 1985, the Baltimore, Md.-based publication annually has recognized outstanding African-American executives, professionals and students in mathematics, science, technology, and engineering.
Cummings completed a bachelor's degree in 1995 and a master's one year later. Following graduation, he joined the Lockheed Corp. (now Lockheed Martin Corp. of Bethesda, Md.) as a stress analyst supporting the F-16 flight test program. He advanced rapidly and currently serves as a senior on-site structural analysis adviser and liaison to Israel Aircraft Industries in that Middle Eastern nation.
At MSU, Cummings was a President's and Dean's scholar and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha social fraternity. His graduate thesis research focused on a process to increase the life of aircraft metals.
A Clarksdale High School graduate, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel A. Cummings.
