MSU presents music of Samuel Barber at faculty artist concert

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Karie Patton October 13, 2000

The Greensboro Center Auditorium in Starkville will be filled with a variety of 20th century piano and flute music Oct. 24 when Mississippi State faculty artist Jackie Edwards-Henry performs the music of Samuel Barber.

Assisting her in the 7:30 p.m. public performance will be department of music education colleagues Leanne Fazio and Lana Johns. Judith Coe, assistant professor of music and coordinator of voice at Mississippi University for Women, and Gregory Smith, voice instructor and musical theater director at Jones County Junior College, also will be featured.

The Greensboro Center is located at 401 Greensboro St., just west of downtown Starkville.

Barber (1910-1981) was a neo-classical composer whose works earned two Pulitzer Prizes. Selections for this performance include compositions for solo piano, piano duet, voice and piano, and flute and piano.

The music involves a variety of styles, among them tango, blues and hoe-down. "Hermit Songs" and "Despite and Still," are poetry- and prose-based song cycles exploring such themes as love, pleasures of human life and spirituality.

While the concert is free, the music education department will accept donations to support future programs, including an Oct. 26 concert by the MSU Wind Ensemble in the McComas Hall theater on campus and a Nov. 9 choral presentation at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Starkville.
