University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Bob Ratliff November 07, 2001

A Mississippi State University civil engineering professor is a new director of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Dennis D. Truax recently was installed at the national ASCE conference in Houston, Texas. He will serve a three-year term as head of the organization's District 14, which represents civil engineers in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

A Hearin-Hess Professor in the College of Engineering, Truax has been a member of the MSU faculty since 1980. In addition to teaching and research duties, he is the faculty adviser for ASCE's student chapter, which twice has been named the top student civil engineering group in the nation.

Truax holds master's and doctoral degrees from MSU. He received a bachelor's at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Founded in 1852, ASCE represents more than 123,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society.
