University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Sammy McDavid February 04, 2003

A two-part winter concert at Mississippi State is being sponsored Monday [Feb. 10] by the music education department and University Bands.

Free to all, the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Colvard Union ballroom. Assistant director of bands Phil Min will direct the MSU Symphonic Band in four compositions, while department head Michael R. Brown leads the Jazz Ensemble and Combo in a variety of swing, jazz and rock compositions.

Symphonic Band numbers include "Flashing Winds" by Belgian composer Jan van der Roost; "Symphonic Tritych," an award-winning, three-movement piece by Kentuckian James Curnow; "Salvation is Created," a Russian Orthodox liturgical written by Pavel Tschesnokoff and transcribed by Bruce Houseknecht; and "God of Our Fathers," Claude T. Smith's national hymn developed in the format of a chorale prelude.

Jazz Ensemble selections will feature "Brass Machine," a jazz/rock piece by Mark Taylor; "A Little Happiness," a light swing tune by Sammy Nestico; and Victor Lopez's up-tempo "Opus de Funk.

The program concludes with two selections by the Mississippi State Messengers, a jazz combo of Brown and faculty colleagues Robert Damm, Sheri Falcone and Richard Human.

For more information on the concert, telephone (662) 325-3070.
