An intensive, five-day summer program at Mississippi State will again provide floral design training to both professionals and amateurs.
Registration for the Aug. 4-8 campus sessions now is under way, with reduced fees available to those completing registration before July 21, said James DelPrince, a coordinator of the event. The early registration fee of $300--$350 thereafter--covers all plant materials and florist supplies. Participants will be asked to bring their own tools.
Offered for the sixth consecutive year, the 8 a.m.-5 p.m. sessions will cover a broad range of floral design issues. Joining DelPrince as an instructor will be Lynette McDougald, manager of the University Florist and a faculty member in the retail floristry program.
The 2003 workshop topic areas include:
--Conditioning cut plant material;
--Using flower foods and anti-transpirants;
--Proper care, handling, storage, and packaging of conditioned plant materials;
--Designing flowers to wear;
--Creating flowers-to-carry designs;
--Constructing dish gardens;
--Arranging flowers in vases;
--Creating sympathy designs; and
--Designing centerpiece and buffet arrangements.
MSU's campus florist is a full-service, student-staffed business that is a major component of the university's unique academic program in retail floristry management.
