The Jan. 29, 2004, concert of a Mississippi State faculty artist will present works arranged especially for flute and guitar.
The free public program featuring flutist Julie Maisel and guitarist Mark Francis begins at 7 p.m. in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. The Faculty Artist Series is sponsored by the university's music education department.
The duo's musical variations will range from 17th century to contemporary selections. Included are "Sonata in D major for flute and guitar," by Leonardo Vinci (1690-1730) to "La Milonga" by Christopher Caliendo, an Emmy-nominated composer whose works have been featured in television programs such as "Dallas," "Paradise" and "Knot's Landing."
Other featured composers are Bedrich Smetana, Mark Francis, Katherine Hoover, Jacques Ibert, and Astor Piazzolla.
Maisel teaches at Millsaps College, but is serving this semester on the MSU music education faculty. She completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Southern Mississippi and master's and doctoral degrees at Florida State University.
She performs with both the Tupelo and Mississippi symphony orchestras and has frequently been featured on "Mississippi Concert Hall," a production of the Mississippi Broadcasting Networks.
Francis, who holds a doctorate from the University of Kentucky, is director of education for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and a former MSU faculty member. His compositions include chamber, orchestral, choral, and electronic works as well as art songs. His compositions have been honored by nine Standard Awards presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
