Four Mississippi State undergraduates are second-place winners among 37 university and college teams from a two-state region participating in a student mathematics contest.
The MSU team earned a $75 prize for its placement at the recent Louisiana/Mississippi Section meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. A Louisiana State University team finished first at the event, which was held this year in Hammond, La.
The MSU squad included Andy Eadon, a sophomore computer science and math double major from Huntsville, Ala.; Davis Herring, a senior computer science and physics double major from Starkville; Lance Pittman, a senior physics and math double major, also from Starkville; and Karolina Sarnowska, a sophomore computer science and math double major from Diamondhead.
Sirisha Kala of Starkville, a master's degree student in mathematics at MSU, won first place and a $100 prize for the research report she presented in the graduate-level competition.
Another MSU master's student in math, Tess Creel of Starkville, also presented a paper in the graduate challenge, while Eadon and Sarnowska presented in the undergraduate category.
