Concern over significant safety hazards apparent at recent home football games is requiring an immediate prohibition at Mississippi State for tailgaters and picnickers planning to run extension cords from university buildings or outdoor receptacles.
The prohibition is in effect immediately and will remain in place for the remainder of the 2004 season.
A proliferation of extension cords in heavily trafficked areas has resulted in several incidents of pedestrians tripping over wires this year, university officials said. An even greater concern is the potential for fatal electric shock hazards to children and others stemming from extensive use of extension cords in congested areas.
Policies on the use of extension cords will be reevaluated prior to the 2005 football season as part of a broader review of tailgating and picnicking.
Announcement of the prohibition is in keeping with MSU's continuing goal of providing an enjoyable and safe environment for all participants in football game day activities, university officials added.
