STARKVILLE, Miss.--A specialist in British and Irish literature is Mississippi State's 2005 Outstanding Honors Program Faculty Member.

Associate professor Kelly Marsh, who also is the English department's undergraduate studies director, was nominated and selected by honors program participants, said University Honors Program director Nancy McCarley.

"Our students nominate professors they consider outstanding and, after discussion, agree on the award," McCarley explained. "They consistently select professors who go on to win other major teaching honors."

Established in 1968, the University Honors Program provides focused, personalized academic experiences for talented students in all fields of study. An organization of some 1,000 members each academic year, it is a charter member of the Southern Regional Honors Council.

Marsh, an MSU faculty member since 1998, holds a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College, with master's and doctoral degrees from Pennsylvania State University.

She regularly teaches honors composition and also chairs the department's Peyton Ward Williams Jr. Distinguished Writing Award Committee.

Marsh has published scholarly articles on such contemporary writers as Mary McCarthy, Roddy Doyle and Helen Fielding, among others.
