What's a 'bookmobile?' Find out at MSU Oct. 4

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Sammy McDavid September 16, 2005

STARKVILLE, Miss.--A traveling library of some 300 distinctive publications will make an Oct. 4 stop at Mississippi State University.

Now touring North American for its fifth consecutive year, the Mobilvre-Bookmobile Project of Philadelphia, Pa., and Montreal, Quebec, is organized, in part, by the Canada Council for the Arts.

The public exhibition is designed to introduce students of today and others to the once-thriving tradition of traveling libraries. Supported by state and local governments, the roaming repositories helped promote the widespread distribution of knowledge and information, particularly in rural areas.

Sponsored on campus by the university art department's Visiting Fine Arts program, the rolling library features a range from handmade and one-of-a-kind works to small-press productions of artistic presentations, magazines, and other independent publications.

The bookmobile's campus location in front of the Colvard Union will mark its second appearance in Oktibbeha County in as many days. On the 3rd, the vintage Airstream trailer will be set up near the Starkville Public Library's Main Street location.

While at MSU, the exhibition's volunteer staff will lead a student workshop on bookmaking in the art department's Stafford Hall studio. Participation will be limited.

In addition to the art department, the visiting display is sponsored by the College of Architecture, Art and Design, University Honors Program and Starkville Public Library.
