Week of MSU events to culminate in 'festival of the lights'

STARKVILLE, Miss.--A week of events highlighting the traditions of India is now under way at Mississippi State.

Sponsored by the university's India Student Association, the various activities collectively are being designated "Anugoonj--Voice of India."

The observance concludes Saturday [Oct. 29] with a public dinner celebrating one of the South Asian nation's most famous traditions, Diwali, or festival of the lights. While most events are free, admission will be $7 for the 5:30 p.m. meal in the Bost Extension Center auditorium

An outdoor fireworks display follows the dinner.

Other activities include:

--Tuesday [the 25th], 7:30 p.m. fashion show and Mehendi, a folk art display, in Simrall Hall auditorium.

--Wednesday [the 26th], 7:30 p.m. musical trivia game called Antakshri, also in the Simrall auditorium.

--Thursday [the 27th], dance performances known as Garba and Dandiya, from 8 p.m. on the Drill Field.

Proceeds from $10 T-shirts sold throughout the week will be contributed to U.S. hurricane relief efforts, as well as to earthquake relief efforts in India and Pakistan.
