STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Cuban musician much-honored in his native country and throughout the Americas will present a Jan. 27 public concert at Mississippi State.
The 7:30 p.m. free performance by pianist Adonis Gonzalez in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall is co-sponsored by the university's music education department and Golden Triangle Music Forum. In addition to Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Chopin, his selections will include compositions by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona.
At 1:30 p.m. the following day, Gonzalez will lead a master class, also in Bettersworth Auditorium. As with the concert, this special presentation is free and open to the public.
Gonzalez, who received a bachelor's degree from the Superior Institute of Art of Havana and a master's from the University of Southern Mississippi, now is a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts.
A winner of the 2005 Concerto Competition at the New Jersey school, he earlier earned the first prize in Cuba's premier piano competition sponsored by the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists. Additionally, he took the top prize at the Teresa Carreno International Piano Competition in Caracas, Venezuela.
