STARKVILLE, Miss--Four Mississippi State students are being honored by the university's Association of Retired Faculty. Accompanied by a $250 check, the honors are an ongoing recognition of both outstanding students and former leaders at the 128-year-old land-grant institution.
Senior English education major Katherine A. Arthur of Union is receiving the Peyton W. Williams Jr. Memorial Writing Award. Arthur, the daughter of Ronald and Janet Arthur, is a President's Scholar and University Honors Program member. Her award is named for the English professor who was longtime editor of the Mississippi Quarterly, the MSU-based scholarly journal of Southern culture.
Senior David C. Donovan of Tifton, Ga., is receiving the William L. Giles Memorial Award in Architecture. A fourth-year major in the five-year architecture program, Donovan is a Dean's Scholar and the son of James and Sandra Donovan. His award is named in honor of MSU's 13th president, in whose administration the architecture program was established.
Senior Karolina A. Sarnowska of Diamondhead is receiving the Harry C. Simrall Memorial Award for Excellence in Engineering. Sarnowska, the daughter of Krzysztof and Beata Sarnowska, is completing a double major in computer science and mathematics. She is a President's Scholar and University Honors Program member. Her award is named for MSU's longtime dean of engineering.
(Not pictured) Senior Margaret S. "Maggie" Rowland of Germantown, Tenn., is receiving the Charles E. Lindley Memorial Leadership Award. The daughter of Stephen and Donna Rowland and a President's Scholar, Rowland is an apparel, textiles and merchandising major in the School of Human Sciences. Her award is named for the longtime dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in which the school is located.
