MSU panhellenic organization, leader receive major honors

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Sammy McDavid May 05, 2006

STARKVILLE, Miss.--The governing body for all Mississippi State sororities is the winner of three of four top honors given during regional competition in Atlanta, Ga.

The university's Panhellenic Executive Council recently was recognized with the Southeastern Panhellenic Association's first-place awards for programming, community service and excellence in newsletters.

The programming and community service awards resulted from the organization's leadership in assisting Starkville's Habitat for Humanity organization. During the fall semester, panhellenic members coordinated fraternity- and sorority-staffed crews in constructing--in record time--a new Habitat residence.

In addition to the organization's regional honors, MSU panhellenic president Jennifer L. Hitt is receiving a $2,000 Gamma Phi Beta National Scholarship. A junior geosciences major and President's List Scholar, she is a member of Kappa Delta social sorority and the daughter of Mark and Lynn Hitt of Oneonta, Ala.

Gamma Phi Beta, a member of the National Panhellenic Council, is devoted to the development and recognition of outstanding female student leaders on college and university campuses. Founded in 1874, it's among the 10 oldest women's organizations in North America.
