A Tuesday [Oct. 21] musical performance at Mississippi State University will feature the works of a new music education faculty member assisted by colleagues in the department.
Composer Mark Applebaum presents "Schizophrenia" in a performance at the McComas Hall theater. The 7:30 p.m. event also features Mississippi State faculty members Robert Damm, Gail Levinsky and Douglas McConnell, along with Scott Bauer of Mississippi University for Women.
The program presents a collection of pieces written or performed by Applebaum. Selections range from famous classical jazz pieces such as "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and "Footprints" to "S-tog," an experimental composition using sound sculptures.
Applebaum also will premiere a new formal percussion overture called "Catfish."
"I hope that through this kind of presentation the audience will not only hear something they recognize, but, more importantly, they'll hear something new and intriguing," Applebaum said. "My goal is to broaden what people think music can be."
Available at the door, general admission tickets are $5; $3 for students.
