Graduate student Daniel J. White of Meridian (center) is the 2006-07 Howell Gwin Scholar in English at Mississippi State University. Son of the Rev. Carl and Frances White, he is a Meridian Community College graduate who received an MSU bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, in May. The $1,000 scholarship was established in 1982 as a memorial to the 25-year English department faculty member. His widow, Elizabeth Smith Gwin of Starkville (at right), later endowed the annual academic award. Also congratulating White is veteran English faculty member Matthew Little.
