STARKVILLE, Miss.--The editor of President Andrew Jackson's papers will highlight the John F. and Jeanne A. Marszalek Library Lecture Series March 21 at Mississippi State.
Dan Feller, a University of Tennessee history professor and director of The Papers of Andrew Jackson collection, will serve as the 2007 Marszalek Lecturer for the 3 p.m. public program in the John Grisham Room of the Mitchell Memorial Library.
In addition to two books on Jackson, Feller has written extensively about the seventh U.S. chief executive, a military hero leader dubbed "Old Hickory" by his many supporters and a founder of the modern Democratic Party who polarized and dominated politics in the 1820s and 1830s. The University of Wisconsin doctoral graduate also is a frequent speaker at professional conferences from Wales to Memphis.
In keeping with tradition, the Marszalek program also will feature the research presentation of a young scholar. Jeff Howell, a Holmes County native and MSU history doctoral student, will discuss continuing conflicts in Mississippi resulting from the display of Confederate symbols.
Now in its fifth year, the lecture series is associated with a research material fund created by the Marszaleks. This year, the Starkville couple will present to library officials a collection of papers by John C. Calhoun, Ulysses S. Grant and other historical figures.
John Marszalek is a Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus at MSU and the author of numerous books about various aspects of the American Civil War and Reconstruction periods. He currently serves as director and mentor for the land-grant institution's distinguished scholars program.
