Kinesiology department speakers to discuss health, coaching

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Robbie Ward March 30, 2007

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State's department of kinesiology will host two guest speakers Thursday (April 5) to discuss topics ranging from weight and good health to coaching styles and management.

Glenn Gaesser, a professor of exercise physiology and director of the kinesiology program at the University of Virginia, will speak about "Big Fat Lies about Weight and Health" at 2 p.m. in Dorman Hall, room 240. Gaesser will examine whether it's easier for an overweight person to get "fit" or "slim" and the effects on the body. He also will discuss the science behind recent headlines in the news dealing with body, weight and health.

Gaesser, author of more than 100 articles on fitness and health, has given many regional, national and international presentations on topics associated with health, fitness and body weight. He has been interviewed frequently by media organizations such as ABC's 20/20, World News Tonight, CNN, NBC Nightly News, and Good Morning America.

Also Thursday, Mississippi State's assistant volleyball coach Joszef Forman will discuss "Bridging the Gap between Science and Coaching: Coaching Style and Motivation Pyramid during Drills" at 12:30 p.m. in the McCarthy Gym, room 117. Forman will focus on how coaches can motivate their players through using principles of science.

Forman has researched and taught human movement science at the Hungarian University of Physical Education, along with coached national teams at the European country, where he was named "coach of the year" three times.

Mississippi State's obesity, weight management and society learning community will sponsor Gaesser's discussion, while the university's department of kinesiology teaching and coaching group will sponsor Forman's speech. Both discussions are free and open to the public.
