STARKVILLE, Miss.--Graduating senior Candace L. Williams of Starkville is the new H.H. Harned Sr. Memorial Scholar at Mississippi State.
Established in 1989 by Harned's children, the $1,000 award is a tribute to the university's former biological sciences department head. The honor is presented annually to the department's outstanding microbiology major.
Williams, the daughter of Ronald and Carol Williams and a 2004 Starkville High School graduate, has worked as a campus research assistant for the past seven years. She was a Dean's Scholar in the 2007 spring semester.
She currently serves as vice president for the MSU chapter of Beta Beta Beta biological honor society and as scholarship and service director for the Delta Gamma social sorority. She also is a member of the Dean's Student Advisory Council in the College of Art and Sciences.
Additionally, Williams has been active in campus chapters of Alpha Epsilon Delta medical, Phi Kappa Phi scholastic, Order of Omega leadership, and Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honor societies, as well as the Shackouls Honor College and American Medical Student Association.
Her award was presented by associate professor Karen Coats, chair of the department's Harned Scholarship Committee.
