Turtle Island Quartet

STARKVILLE, Miss.--An innovative group from the San Francisco Bay area brings its distinct musical sound to Mississippi State April 3 for the final program of the university's 2007-08 Lyceum Series.

Two-time Grammy Award winners, the Turtle Island Quartet will be featured in a 7:30 p.m. concert in Lee Hall auditorium.

Violists David Balakrishnan, Evan Price and Mads Tolling, and cellist Mark Summer will perform selections from their latest album, "A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane," an interpretation of works by the 20th century jazz master.

Available at the door, tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, by request; and $8 for children ages 3-12. MSU students are admitted free with valid identification.

Advance tickets also may be purchased at www.ticketweb.com.

Formed in 1985, the group has been a commercial success by bridging varied musical styles, including bluegrass, European classical, funk, and jazz, among others. Its name was taken by a co-founding former member from Native American mythology, where "Turtle Island" was a description of the North American continent.
