Nearly 200 state educators will be in Jackson later this month for the third annual winter conference of the Program for Research and Evaluation of Public Schools.
"Questions with Answers: Improving Student Achievement" will be the theme for the Jan. 28-30 program at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
PREPS, as it's usually referred to, is Mississippi's oldest and largest educational consortium. With offices in Mississippi State University's College of Education, the organization currently includes 90 school districts stretching from the Tennessee border to the Gulf Coast and the Alabama line to the Mississippi River.
Marie Carbo, executive director of the National Reading Styles Institute in Syossett, N.Y., will be the featured conference speaker. A former classroom teacher and learning disabilities specialist, she is the author of numerous articles, booklets and skill books.
She also is the author of three groundbreaking books on ways to improve reading abilities. They include "How to Record Books for Maximum Reading Gains," "Teaching Students to Read Through Their Individual Learning Styles" and "What Every Principal Should Know About Teaching Reading."
