Minority student achievers to receive tribute

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Sammy McDavid January 27, 1998

Graduating minority high school students who have excelled in the classroom are being invited Feb. 13 to Mississippi State for the university's Minority Student Achievement Day.

"The Minority Student Achievement Program salutes the academic accomplishments of high school seniors from throughout the region," said Jimmy W. Abraham, director of enrollment services.

Now in its ninth year, the recognition program drew nearly 250 from Mississippi and the four surrounding states in 1997. "This year, we are expecting even more to take part," Abraham said.

In addition to continuous campus tours and a mid-morning general assembly, the students will be special guests at a luncheon given by President Malcolm Portera.

Abraham said invitations have been mailed to seniors who scored well on the American College or Scholastic Aptitude tests. School counselors also were asked to nominate students with superior academic achievements.

"In addition to meeting some currently enrolled students who may be their classmates next year, we want them to become familiar with our faculty, administrators and staff," he said.

Registration for the day-long program begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Colvard Union.

For more information on the program, contact the Office of Enrollment Services at (601) 325-3076. The e-mail address is LEAD@msstate.edu.
