University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Kenneth Billings February 16, 2009

A group of Mississippi State students are joining Friday [Feb. 20] with students from Starkville's Ward-Stewart Elementary and Henderson Intermediate schools for two free performances celebrating Black History Month.

The 35 university students, including natives of Nigeria and Tanzania, are collaborating with music and choir students from the two public schools to present "A Celebration of African Heritage."

Professor Robert Damm, director of the MSU music department's music education partnership program, will direct.

The public concerts will begin at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Henderson Intermediate School gymnasium. The program features a percussion ensemble, traditional African songs and dances and Nigerian poetry.

For more information, contact Damm at 662-325-7728.
