Civic teachers invited to apply for 'We the People' institute at MSU

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Kenneth Billings April 21, 2009

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Applications continue to be accepted from public and private school teachers for a free summer program at Mississippi State providing an in-depth study of the principles and history of the U.S. Constitution.

Taking place June 16--18 on the university campus, "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" is open to educators at the upper elementary, middle, and high school levels. The summer institute is supported by a grant from the national Center for Civic Education.

Registration, which is limited to a maximum of 25, includes lodging and meals, a classroom set of "We the People" textbooks and instructional support materials. Participants wishing to obtain 2.0 continuing education units may do so for a $20 fee.

The ultimate goal of "We the People" is to help Mississippi students better comprehend the history and principles of American constitutional government. Instructional training involves scholarly presentations, large-group discussions and small-group hands-on activities, all supporting the Mississippi social studies curriculum framework.

Teachers of grade 5 United States studies, grade 8 U.S. history and grade 12 American government are encouraged especially to apply.

The "We the People/Mississippi" program is based in MSU's department of curriculum, instruction and special education.
