Tiempo Libre

STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Miami-based Cuban jazz group twice nominated for Grammy Awards performs Tuesday [April 20] at Mississippi State.

The concert by Tiempo Libre begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium. It will be the final event of the university's 2009-10 Lyceum Series, and the seven-man group is replacing the Spaghetti Western Orchestra, whose U.S. tour was cancelled.

Equally at home in concert halls, clubs and dance venues, the band members work hard to continue the rich musical traditions of their native Cuba. Each was classically trained at La ENA, the island nation's premier conservatory, during a time when it was illegal to listen to American songs on the radio.

Recently signed to Sony, the group last year released the critically acclaimed "Bach in Havana," which currently is being played nationwide. It also has been featured live on The Tonight Show, and at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Hollywood Bowl, among other venues.
