Jack Reed Sr., a prominent Tupelo businessman and onetime Republican gubernatorial candidate, will be at Mississippi State Friday [April 30] to sign copies of his recently released book, "A Time to Speak: Speeches by Jack Reed."
The hour-long public program in the John Grisham Room of the university's Mitchell Memorial Library begins at 4:30 p.m. A reception follows at the same location.
Edited by former Clarion-Ledger and Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal writer and columnist Danny McKenzie, the 192-page book covers Reed's leadership roles in promoting state education, race relations, economic development, and various other major issues. More than a dozen of his formal addresses over a 50-year period are included in the University Press of Mississippi release. (For more, visit www.upress.state.ms.us/books/1140.)
In addition to owning a clothing store that bears the family name, Reed served as president of the Mississippi Economic Council and chair of President George H.W. Bush's National Advisory Council on Education. He also was a charter member of the United Methodist Church's Commission on Religion and Race.
