MSU to incoming students: 'Take one for fun'

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Kenneth Billings May 06, 2010

STARKVILLE, Miss.--When scheduling fall semester classes, new Mississippi State students are being encouraged to "take one for fun."

Through the First Year Experience program, the university offers freshmen and new transfer students more than 20 seminars and six "learning communities" classes in a wide variety of topics. Participation is limited to those entering for the first time and can only involve a single course.

A complete course list is available at www.ctl.msstate.edu/programsandservices/fye/.

The offerings are designed to enhance campus newcomers' developing connections to the 132-year-old land grant institution, while introducing subjects that range from African cuisine to an examination of collegiate football.

The learning community concept also permits small groups to take courses together and, in the process, forge connections and friendships that endure throughout the college experience. These classes may apply to academic core-curriculum requirements.

Registration for FYE classes and learning communities may be completed in the same manner as for traditional courses.
