In ceremonies Tuesday [June 1], Mississippi State honored Air Force Capt. Kermit O. Evans Sr., an alumnus who died during military service in Iraq. Evans' widow Perneatha and son Kermit Jr. unveiled a bust of the 2000 chemical engineering graduate at the university's G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for America's Veterans. Named in the Hollandale native's honor, the center's recently renovated dayroom will be used for leisure and study activities by campus veterans. Capt. Evans, a member of the 27th Engineering Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., died in 2006 in a helicopter accident in El Anbar Province.
