MEDIA ADVISORY: Backpacks given to Afghan children

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Harriet Laird September 14, 2010

A 9-year-old girl in Afghanistan named Lamia, who needed a pair of shoes, inspired Lt. Gen. John Bradley and wife Jan to do something.

The Bradleys began the Lamia Afghan Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing for needy children and families in Afghanistan.

The retired three star U.S. Air Force Commander will make a presentation on the Mississippi State campus on Wednesday, September 15. Free to the public, the noon event will take place in Thompson Hall's Tully Auditorium.

The Bradleys will also accept a gift of 600 backpacks bearing the university's logo to be sent to Afghanistan.

The backpacks were purchased by university faculty, staff and students in collaboration with the Maroon Edition reading program. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Forest Resources organized the fund raiser and presentation.
