Symphony chorus announces 'Broadway Sensations' performance

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Allison Matthews March 17, 2011

STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Mississippi State University-Starkville Symphony Chorus will present "Broadway Sensations" in a free March 28 concert at the Greensboro Center.

Conducted by Ted Beverly, the group will collaborate with the State Messengers, an instrumental combo comprised of MSU music faculty members under the direction of Michael Brown. Lauren Zumwalt on piano and Len Bobo on synthesizer will provide accompaniment.

The 7:30 p.m. program opens with the chorus performing "Sondheim! A Choral Celebration," a collection of American composer Stephen Sondheim's best-loved songs as arranged by Mac Huff. Both the music and lyrics have received wide acclaim, including Tony Awards for best score for "Into the Woods," "Musical for Passion," "Sweeney Todd," "A Little Night Music," "Follies," and "Company."

The Messengers will follow with two instrumental arrangements by Jerome Kern before the chorus returns with Stephen Schwartz's songs from "Wicked," the musical rendering of the good witch-bad witch classic, "The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum.

For more concert information, contact Beverly at 662-323-5722, ext. 13.
