University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Sammy McDavid September 21, 2011

STARKVILLE, Miss.--An award-winning author and researcher in African American politics and related matters speaks Monday [Sept. 26] at Mississippi State.

"The Price of the Ticket: Barack Obama and the Rise and Fall of Black Politics" is the title of Fredrick C. Harris' presentation. The public event is organized and sponsored by the university's African American Studies.

The program begins at 4 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium of McCool Hall.

A political science professor, Harris directs Columbia University's Institute for Research in African American Studies. Immediately following the remarks, he will sign copies of his 1999 work, "Something Within: Religion in African American Political Activism."

Released by Oxford University Press, "Something Within" won the V.O. Key Prize of the Southern Political Science Association and Distinguished Book Award of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists.

Harris' current book project focuses on the Obama candidacy's implications for black politics. Its tentative title is the same as his MSU presentation.

He is a doctoral graduate of Northwestern University. Prior to joining the Columbia faculty, he taught for many years at the University of Rochester.
