STARKVILLE, Miss.--A former senior administrator with the U.S. Department of Agriculture is this year's guest for Mississippi State's 2012 Carlton N. Owen Lecture Series.

Mark E. Rey, undersecretary for natural resources and environment from 2001-09, will lead the March 28 public program. His presentation begins at 10 a.m. in the auditorium of the university's Franklin Center for Furniture Manufacturing and Management.

Rey's address will focus on challenges facing forestry and the forest sector, including land ownership, industry governance and financial support for forest research.

At USDA, he oversaw the U.S. Forest and Natural Resources Conservation services, among others. Currently, he serves as a public affairs consultant and executive-in-residence at Michigan State University

The Owen Lecture Series was established nearly two decades ago in the College of Forest Resources by the Greenville, S.C., resident and 1974 MSU graduate for whom it is named. The program focuses on natural resource conservation issues.

Rey has held a number of positions within the timber industry, including vice president for the American Forest and Paper Association and executive director of the American Forest Resource Alliance.

He is a University of Michigan graduate, with a bachelor's degree in wildlife management and forestry, and master's in natural resources policy and administration.
