STARKVILLE, Miss.--In recognition of his contributions to student well-being at Mississippi State, Greg Dunaway is receiving the Dean of Students Award of Excellence. He becomes only the second recipient of the honor since its inception in 2007, said Thomas Bourgeois, dean of students.

"This award is only presented to someone who has made a transformative difference in the lives of students," he said. "We don't take this honor lightly, and we don't present it to those who simply 'do their jobs.'"

Dunaway, who was named associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences earlier this year, is a tireless advocate for students, Bourgeois said. "He has consistently gone above and beyond the required effort to meet student needs, and we're honored to recognize him with this award."

In his role as associate dean, Dunaway's responsibilities include academic affairs and student services. He coordinates all aspects of the college's undergraduate programs, including curriculum issues, student advising and awards, and scholarships.

The Thomas Bailey Professor of Sociology, he is a former sociology department head and was instrumental in creating the state's only criminology degree program.

"In his dealings with students, Dr. Dunaway has shown time and again that he is dedicated to student success," Bourgeois said. "We're fortunate to have him in a leadership role."
