STARKVILLE, Miss.--Nine Mississippi State students are winners of spring semester undergraduate research symposium awards.
Sponsored by the university's Shackouls Honors College, the competition provides high-achieving scholars with the opportunity to publicly present their independent research projects.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for others to see the fantastic work that our undergraduate students are doing," said Seth Oppenheimer, SHC undergraduate research director.
The competition drew 33 student participants. Of that total, 28 were visual presentations, while five were oral--also referred to as "research talks."
"We're trying to encourage more students in humanities and arts to participate," Oppenheimer said. "The introduction of the talks is intended to broaden the subject areas represented in the symposium."
Held biannually each spring and summer, the symposium covers a wide range of subjects, including the physical, social and life sciences.

BARTLETT, Tenn.--Senior animal and dairy science major Rachel S. Howell, second place, research talks.
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn.--Senior aerospace engineering major Michael Barton, honorable mention, research talks.
COLUMBUS--Kelsey L. Thompson, second place, social science.
FORT WORTH, TEXAS--Senior biological sciences major Jessica L. Martin, second place, biological science.
FULTON--Senior psychology major Ethan Flurry, first place, social science.
STARKVILLE--Junior computer science major Ankit S. Arya, first place, research talks; sophomore mechanical engineering major Manish R. Borse, first place, physical science; senior biological sciences major Hanna E. Dorman, first place, biological science; and freshman biological engineering major Jing Liao, second place, physical science.
