STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The 2012-2013 Mississippi State Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series opens with a Constitution Day event Monday [Sept. 17].
Historian Walter Stahr's lecture, "William Seward, the South and the Constitution," takes place at 4 p.m. in the McCool Hall atrium. Free and open to the public, a reception and book signing will follow.
Sept. 17 marks the day when the remaining delegates of the 1787 Philadelphia Convention met to sign the Constitution.
Stahr is the author of "Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man," published by Simon and Schuster earlier this year, and "John Jay: Founding Father," a 2006 Hambledon Continuum publication. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University, Stahr earned degrees at Harvard Law School and the Kennedy School of Government. Before turning to historical writing, he practiced law for nearly 30 years and served as senior counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C.
