Dixieland tunes to highlight symphony season opener

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Margaret Kovar September 19, 2012

The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony opens its 44th season Tuesday [Sept. 25] with its "Pops on the Plaza" performance.

The free, 6:30 p.m. event is annually held at Cadence Bank plaza in downtown Starkville on the corner of Main and Jackson streets. Seating and snacks will be provided.

The concert will feature the Barons of Boardtown, a new musical group consisting of MSU faculty members professor Richard Human, trombone; instructor Sheri Falcone, clarinet; and professor Jason Baker, drums.

Starkville musicians Jim Beatty, bass, and Doug Thomas, tenor saxophone, will play in the seven-piece Dixieland combo. Michael Brown, head of MSU's music department, is the symphony's director and will play cornet with the group, which will perform a variety of Dixieland tunes, including the ever-popular "When the Saints Go Marching In."

For more information about the concert, visit www.starkvillemsusymphony.org or telephone the MSU music department at 662-325-3070.
