Participants from eight states and three foreign countries are attending a lightning protection course at Mississippi State through Wednesday.
The university is home to the High Voltage Laboratory, a part of the electrical and computer engineering department. The lab, which provides research, evaluation and testing, is the largest one of its type at a North American university.
Representatives from utilities, industries and research laboratories are learning more about incidence of lightning, insulation, tower grounding, and calculations of line designs, among others. There will be demonstrations in the laboratory, which includes a traditional transformer, voltage dividers and transformer test sets.
Lab director is Stan Grzybowski, formerly head of high voltage and electrical materials at the Technical University of Poznan, Poland.
Also on the program is Joseph D. Renowden, transmission staff engineer for Florida Power & Light Co.
The course is coordinated by the university's Division of Continuing Education
