Annual fair celebrates 'magic' of wood products

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Maridith Geuder October 09, 1998

More than 7,000 third- and fourth-graders from around the state are expected this month for Mississippi State's award-winning Wood Magic Science Fair.

Sponsored Oct. 23-30 by the university's Forest Products Laboratory and Forest and Wildlife Research Center, the hands-on educational program introduces students to a range of activities relating to trees and the environment.

Now in its third year--and twice selected to receive the Mississippi Public Education Forum's Award for Excellence--Wood Magic features dozens of exhibits. Approximately 30 corporations and associations are co-sponsors.

For students, there are opportunities to guess the strength of wood and listen to music produced by wooden instruments. They also may observe a working sawmill, furniture-testing equipment and paper and plywood production techniques.

Teachers receive teaching guides and experiment samples to help illustrate principles about forests and forest-related industries.
