University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Sammy McDavid April 01, 1999

Mississippi State today announced the high school seniors who are the university's 12th annual selections for its largest single scholarships.

The $30,000 Ottilie Schillig Leadership Scholarships cover the cost of tuition and fees, room and board, and books during four years of study.

Chosen by a special committee, the 1999 Schillig Scholars include five from Mississippi and one each from Alabama and Florida. They are: Brian E. Barnes of Clarksdale and Clarksdale High School; Lauren S. Becnel and Lynn Parker, both of Gulfport and Gulfport High School; Abbie L. Davidson of Mt. Olive, Ala., and the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School; Katie B. Mullins of Milton, Fla., and Santa Rosa Christian School; Gordon M. Pace of Tupelo and Tupelo High School; and Emily L. Sanford of Starkville and Starkville High School.

"This honor reflects these students' many outstanding achievements in the classroom and in leadership activities," said Donald Zacharias, MSU president emeritus and committee chair. "Like those who have come before them, this year's group of Schillig Scholars will be tremendous additions to Mississippi State University."

First made available in 1987, the leadership awards were established through a major endowment by the private Schillig Trust of Port Gibson. Of 15 Schillig Scholars currently enrolled, two will graduate in May.

Among more than 450 who applied this year, the seven new members will be recognized formally April 18 at a campus luncheon preceding annual Scholarship Recognition Day activities.

Schillig Scholars participate in a variety of special campus activities and meet regularly with leaders in education, industry, government, and business. They also are expected to be active in student organizations and programs.
