Reading conference invites participants to 'tell your story'

University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Maridith Geuder October 21, 1999

Sports, technology, poetry, and social studies will come together Nov. 8 at the 1999 Mississippi State University Reading Conference.

With the theme "Telling Your Story," the annual program is expected to draw some 500 teachers, librarians, teaching assistants, tutors, and interested community members from around the state. The purpose is to update participants on the latest instructional materials and classroom techniques for motivating young readers.

The 8 a.m.-4 p.m. program in the Coskrey Auditorium of Memorial Hall is sponsored by MSU's department of curriculum and instruction and the College of Education's Student Reading Council.

Keynote speaker for the 8 a.m. opening session is Gloria C. Correro, MSU professor emeritus of education. One of the state's leading authorities on kindergarten and early childhood education, the Greenwood native helped lead efforts in the late 1970s to provide a public kindergarten program in Mississippi.

Before retiring in June, she was associate dean of education at her Starkville alma mater. She continues to serve on the National Reading Panel and is active in research establishing policy for reading practice.

Conference topics include storytelling with nonfiction, using sports literature to engage young readers, reading and diversity, and technology as a writing tool, among others.
