University Relations News Bureau (662) 325-3442 Contact: Maridith Geuder November 05, 1999

The next John Grisham? Anne Rice?

Mississippi State students wishing to test their writing talents are invited to enter the university's annual undergraduate writing competition.

Richard Lyons, associate professor of English and director of the creative writing program, said entries are accepted in the categories of short stories, poetry, one-act plays, and formal and informal essays.

Dec. 6 is the deadline for submissions, which will be judged by editors of the Jabberwock Review, the campus literary journal. Entries must previously be unpublished and adhere to length and other requirements.

Winners advance to regional competition with students from more than 100 universities, Lyons said.

"Winners at this level are published in the Southern Literary Journal," he added.

For more information or for contest rules, telephone Lyons at (662) 325-2362.
