Mississippi State University's top scholarship group is seeking nominations for the first Schillig High School Counselor Award.

Schools around Mississippi are being invited to nominate one high school guidance counselor who has made significant contributions to the academic progress of students.

"Feb. 1 is the nomination deadline," said Schillig mentor John F. Marszalek, a Giles Distinguished Professor of History at MSU.

The $500 award will be presented in the spring during campus Scholarship Recognition Day activities.

Established in 1986 with a major gift from the Ottilie Schillig Trust of Port Gibson, MSU's Schillig Leadership Scholarship Program recognizes incoming freshmen who have excelled in leadership activities, service and scholarship. The awards cover the cost of tuition and fees, room and board, and books for four years of study.

"Many of the Schillig Scholars have commented on the importance of a high school counselor in encouraging and supporting their academic goals," Marszalek said. "The Schillig Society, which this year includes about 20 scholars, wanted to honor the work of these sometimes unsung heroes."

Nomination packets should include:

--The nominee's resume and a two-page statement of professional philosophy,

--A letter of support from the high school principal, and

--No more than three letters of additional support, including one each from a student and a teacher.

All correspondence should be mailed in care of the Schillig Society, P.O. Box 2303, Mississippi State, MS 39762.
