Especially during the Christmas season, people look for ways to help those less fortunate. Last year, however, graduate programs manager Karin Lee seized an opportunity to help one of the most prominent charity organizations in a special time of need.
While reading a local newspaper, Lee learned that the Starkville Salvation Army--facing closure--needed volunteers for its annual Red Kettle Campaign, the group's major fundraiser.
As vice president of the Starkville Multi-Culture Lions Club, Lee, a native of Germany, mobilized a group of more than 50 volunteers representing 16 countries to ring bells. The group is continuing their volunteer efforts this year, as well.
Lee said the majority of those participating are members of the international community at Mississippi State as faculty, staff, and students and are available to ring bells on days when other volunteers are in short supply.
"Being a part of this fundraiser provides the international community a sense of belonging and a way to get involved in the community," Lee said.
"I believe if you live in a community, you have a duty to give back, and I love it when so many people pull together for the common good."
