About this event

The Mississippi State University Department of Geosciences — with the support and co-sponsorship of the Department of Communication, Department of English and College of Arts and Sciences — is proud to welcome renowned author and journalist Andrew Blum to campus to discuss his new book, "The Weather Machine: A Journey Inside the Forecast."

Admission is free.

"The Weather Machine," published in June 2019 by Ecco/HarperCollins, explores the infrastructure behind the weather forecast, the people who built it, and what it reveals about our climate and our planet. Through his visits to old weather stations, satellite launches, and labs where scientists work to create a supercomputer model of the atmosphere, Blum discovers that we have quietly entered a golden age of meteorology—our tools allow us to predict weather more accurately than ever, and yet we haven’t learned to trust them, nor can we guarantee the fragile international alliances that allow our modern weather machine to exist.
