About this event

Dr. Guadalupe Marquez-Velarde, Assistant Professor of Sociology from Utah State University, will give a research talk titled, "Challenging the Myth of Racial Homogeneity among Mexicans in the U.S." as part of the Race in America Lecture Series.

Description of Talk:
Existing assertions on health outcomes and mortality among Mexican Americans and foreign-born Mexicans assumes racial homogeneity.  I examine how Mexicans of distinct racial backgrounds fit into recognized patterns of racial health disparities and demonstrate that Mexican Americans and Mexicans in the U.S. are not homogenous nor equally advantaged in terms of health.  Racialization yields intra-ethnic disparities among Mexicans.  This has significant implications for re-thinking notions of ethnic homogeneity and the racialization of ethnic groups.
