Our Students Are Rural: Why That Matters for Student Success and Retention

About this event

Students from rural areas face particular challenges accessing and finding success within higher education. These barriers result in only 56% of students from rural schools in the U.S. enrolling in college and only 41% of rural students graduating with a postsecondary degree within six years (National Student Clearinghouse, 2022). At the same time, rural students possess unique strengths that can help them navigate higher education, from enrollment in institutions to completion of their degree programs.

Join Ty C. McNamee as he shares literature about rural students’ experiences related to postsecondary access and success, including both the obstacles and triumphs of such populations. Then, we will reflect and brainstorm about how we can both combat challenges and capitalize on strengths of rural students attempting to enroll and complete their degrees at Mississippi State University.
