MSU smoke-free campus policy aims to create healthy environment

Mississippi State University is a smoke-free campus. Our policy prohibits the use of any combustible or vapor products anywhere on campus property including university buildings, university grounds, university vehicles, parking areas and sidewalks. The smoke-free campus policy is part of the university's commitment to creating a healthy environment for all members of our campus community. Use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookah, or other similar devices are prohibited by this policy.

Of particular importance, we have noted a significant increase in our students reporting the use of e-cigarettes. In the most recent survey administered by the Tobacco Control Unit in our Social Science Research Center, over 30% of our MSU students have tried an e-cigarette, like JUUL. Distressingly, these delivery devices have recently been associated with significant and serious illness among young users in several states. Additionally, these devices deliver nicotine in a way that is highly addictive to users.

While the university is not requiring faculty, staff, and students to quit smoking or using tobacco products, we do expect the policy to be followed while on university property, and we are offering support to our students and employees who wish to stop smoking or using tobacco products. These programs are free of charge with the exception of prescribed medications that may be required. The following cessation programs are available:
