STARKVILLE, Miss.—The Ulysses S. Grant Association at Mississippi State University this weekend is hosting its annual meeting, a virtual event that is free and open to the public.

Taking place from 1-4:30 p.m., the Saturday [May 1] meeting includes four presentations, one pre-recorded and three that will be streamed live via Webex. To view the full schedule, visit https://scholarsjunction.msstate.edu/us-grant-association-meeting/2021.

Presenters include distinguished historians Frank J. Williams, John F. Marszalek and Ryan P. Semmes. Williams, retired Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice, and his wife Virginia, gifted in 2017 their private Lincoln and Civil War collection amassed over the past 50 years to Mississippi State, one of only six universities in the U.S. to house a presidential library. Marszalek serves as executive director and managing editor of the Ulysses S. Grant Association and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Museum, housed in MSU’s Mitchell Memorial Library. Semmes, an associate professor who holds both a bachelor’s and Ph.D. in history from MSU, is coordinator of MSU Libraries’ Congressional and Political Research Center.

Eddie Rangel, the Grant library’s administrative assistant, is coordinating the virtual meeting, along with Paul Huddleston, systems administrator at Mitchell Memorial Library. Ulysses S. Grant Association members from across the nation will be attending the virtual meeting.

MSU Libraries Professor David Nolan and U.S. Grant Collection Publications Editor Louie Gallo, along with Marszalek, edited Grant’s memoirs for Harvard University Press. They are currently working on William T. Sherman’s memoirs that also will be published by Harvard.
