As Mississippi’s leading research university, Mississippi State University offers a multitude of student research opportunities. Students are encouraged to pursue research projects that align with personal interests and career goals.

With MSU’s research enterprise continuing to grow, opportunities are continually increasing for students in all departments and classifications. There are several benefits of undergraduate participation in research, including the development of new skills, better understanding of potential career fields and pathways, peer and faculty mentoring, as well as the chance to sharpen skills such as collaboration and communication.

For more information on student research, visit the MSU Undergraduate Research and Creative Discovery Program at www.urcd.msstate.edu. Students engaged in research also are invited to participate in the Undergraduate Research Symposium, which is held every summer and spring.

Any student with an interest in conducting faculty-mentored or self-led research is encouraged to pursue the following steps to get started in their research venture:

  1. Identify your interests along with the ideal time commitment you have in mind.

  2. Visit the corresponding department website to view faculty members and the current research they are conducting.

  3. Update your resume.

  4. Set goals for yourself and your research.

  5. Contact someone: email/meet with a professor or view available opportunities at www.urcd.msstate.edu/research. Students can also contact Dr. Anastasia Elder, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research in the Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College, at ace24@msstate.edu.
