STARKVILLE, Miss.—A rising Mississippi State junior will study abroad this summer through the prestigious Fulbright UK Summer Institute, one of the most selective summer scholarship programs in the world.
Hays Romano, of Alabaster, Alabama, will spend three weeks at Lancaster University Summer Institute on Film. Romano is a member of the Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College, a political science and foreign language double major who is minoring in pre-law and film studies. He was MSU’s first recipient of the Donna L. Clevinger Endowed Scholarship In Creative and Performing Arts.

“Film is one of my greatest passions in life,” he said. “Though I have made short films, I have yet to receive any kind of formal training in practical filmmaking. I believe that what I learn in the Fulbright Program will allow me to further explore my passion for film and expose me to the culture of the UK, making me a more well-rounded person and allowing me to take another step toward becoming a true global citizen.”
Fulbright UK Summer Institutes cover participants’ major costs and provide distinctive support and cultural education, including comprehensive guidance before their departure, enrichment opportunities in the UK and the chance to be part of the Fulbright alumni network.
David Hoffman, director of MSU’s Office of Prestigious Scholarships, noted this is the seventh MSU student chosen in the past five years to participate in this program. OPES assisted Romano with his scholarship application. Visit www.honors.msstate.edu/initiatives/office-prestigious-external-scholarships for more information.
The US-UK Fulbright Commission selects participants through a rigorous application and interview process. In making these awards, the commission looks not only for academic excellence, but also for a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills and a plan to give back to the recipient’s home country upon returning.
